Its similar to annatto in its behavior, its not very much soluble in water so it needs to be soaked in alcohol or extracted with soda ash. It gives a spectrum of earthy and warm yellow and orange, to deep browns and grays when its combined with different additives and mordants. Due to its high amount of tannin found in it, you can experiment with mordanting and over dyeing with it.
